It’s official, we can talk about skiing again. The Telegraph, Times, Guardian – with a pull out and keep Observer section – Daily Mail and Independent have all run skiing articles for the upcoming season.
It’s a bit uncomfortable living in the mountains, you don’t want to jinx it, but it is a fact, the season is upon us, and like a Dutch auction someone has to loose their bottle first and mention the obvious, namely that winter is nigh.
Fortunately in the UK, what with the independent press and that, they all decided at the same time to talk about skiing.
To be honest it’s not edifying reading, 13% fewer people taking to the pistes last season is the figure bandied by one and all, 40% less chalets on offer, seems to be the consensus and a strange equation of prices up across the board, despite everything being worse seems to be the bottom line. But of course this is coupled with great bargains still to be had if you know where to look.
The pounds’ collapse can’t help, but it would seem because everything is paid in Euros prices must rise to cover the huge losses the industry suffered last season.
There is an elephant in sight, and it’s sliding down a mountain on sticks. But the good thing is we can at least talk about it. The season is upon us, it might not be dressed in white, but ivory is a close second.
