Ski training begins early

by Fergus Rainbow on May 14, 2010

It’s quite weird, there is something strange going on with time – it just seems to be going much faster and there seems to be less of it, there is no reason for this as technically I’m doing less, I don’t go into an office for eight hours a day now I live in France, I still achieve as much as I set myself, but it just feels as if ski season 2010/11 is already upon us.

With this in mind I have started to prepare for the pistes, building on any fitness that might have accumulated in the last season. I’m not even certain skiing is a sport that one gets fit doing, maybe a wee bit as one’s muscles ache less and there are fewer breaks in the piste it took 5 minutes to do at the start of the season that now takes 2.

For me fitness is measured in belt size and I didn’t see a great reduction in myself for the last season. Anyway the plan is to seriously attack the snow this season, so I want to be ready (grrr), so I have been going on a mountain walk for a week or so, it’s just quite nice to be in Serre Chevalier, because walking with a reason puts it in the “doing something” camp, rather than the recreational one. There are many little mountain paths to choose, unfortunately I can see myself attempting something out of my ability range in a few months.

Yesterday I added a run section to the walk, this will go on for a week or so then I’ll add another run section and keep building, it is not really me, but I want to do moguls properly this year, I “shop” which is mince about across the slope not turning, no more – I am a powerful spirit who can seize the piste -  that’s my dream.

It’s not quite a nightmare, but the running shoes I had have all fallen apart here, maybe it’s the lack of humidity that’s destroyed the glue, but two pairs have exploded and the thrid has given me a blister.

It sounds idyllic but reality is never far away.
