Putting the boot in

by Fergus Rainbow on May 3, 2010

Here’s something I’ve only just become aware of – the idea of “packing a boot out”.

Do you know what that is? No-one’s mentioned it before, but it is the process by which a ski boot’s inards get so compacted it means you just have to go out and buy a new one.

This gem came, obviously, from a forum I found on an American ski website, talk about brainwashed into accepting consumerisim, which had some guy pose the question “how long does it take for a boot to pack out?”

What do you think? How many days use out of a pair of boots that cost Eur200 at least would you expect to get? The answers furnished seemed to indicate 35-60 days, eh? I strongly suspect these answers were posted by manufacturers of ski boots, but it has made me wonder if there might be some truth to the claim ski boots are so delicate they deteriate at such a pace.

My boots do 20 days a season, this year I think closer to 40 as I live in Serre Chevalier now and I’m worried I’ll have some control loss mid carve and experience extreme equipment fail. Although when I bought them four or five years ago the guy in the shop said nothing.

It’s not just me, I skied with a friend this year whose boots are 10 years old, is he in danger? Or is it just American marketing hype?

Now don’t get me wrong I’m not anti-American but their corporation is run by evil people who have no closer association with democracy than cigarettes do with freedom. Trouble is these people run the show with our consent, unfortunately silence does equal assent. To see how they do it check out Edward Bernays, the father of modern advertising.

I for one am sick of being a silent slave, I’m trying to become a freeman on the land, but have no idea if this concept flies in France. If you have a clue do drop us a line, otherwise the boot will stay on the other foot.

After some investigation (I spoke to Christov from Araoki ski hire shop in Pre Chabert), a pair of boots should last, if used everyday for the four month season, for three/ four years, ie up to 480 full days.
He worked this out by how often the ski teachers change their boots – he was shocked to think it was recomended a monitor change his boots twice in a season.
There you go, as for the 60 day change probably a figure that boot manufacturers would like you to buy a new product after.
