Haiti closer than you think

by Fergus Rainbow on January 21, 2010

It’s nice that people are nicer than me, I can blame my callousness on my current lack of watching the telly and having opinions stuffed into my head, but for some reason the Haiti earthquake hasn’t really registered on my emotive scale, although the American invasion has – does Haiti have oil or something?

It probably does make me a bad person, but this year I am not even in a position to help myself, so sorry Haiti, you’re going to have to get by without me I’m afraid.

The Station Bar did a lovely benefit, so that’s nice, but I didn’t go, because I haven’t got a car or bus fare.

Anyway, I was reading some old nonsense from some, almost certainly, hippy and he was saying that he foresees many earthquakes this year, intelligence I shared with my father in law, who said Monetier les Bains is in the firing line as we sit over a geologic fault. We had a seismic movement of 3.3 on October 5th 2007 in fact.

Which makes perfect sense as this is the reason the village is home to thermal baths and many hot springs.

Gulp.

I feel a bit bad now about Haiti, but only in a selfish way, so will be launching a Pre-Monetier Quake relief fund to make certain the skiing can go on should anything happen.

The local remedial college has pledged 45 slow, but not dangerous, lads who will carry distressed skiers up to the top in sedan chairs, with your help we can fuel these work horses with only three cup-a-soups a day.

So do all you can and spare what you can, as a skier isn’t just for Christmas, it’s for life.

FYI The Station events made just under 1000€ – so it was made up to 1000€ by Clive and Maria.
In the raffle Sue won a wooly hat and I won some Badminton racquets and some shuttlecocks. Happy Days.
