Briancon Apartment to rent

by Rick Lomas on February 19, 2008

The attractive 175 m² apartment is within the fortified old town at the heart of Briançon. It comprises of two floors with wooden beam ceilings throughout and has been recently refurbished to a high standard. It comprises a large attractive sitting room with a superb wood burning stove, kitchen-diner, utility room, four bedrooms, a downstairs bathroom with a full size bath, an upstairs shower room and two toilets. The apartment can comfortably accommodate 10 people. In the bedrooms there are two double beds, two bunk beds and two fold-out beds, all newly purchased. It is fully equipped with new appliances including dishwasher, washing machine, freezer, four-ring hob/oven, microwave and all kitchen equipment. All rooms have electric heating, and of course, the large wood-burning stove in the lounge area.

Please note the apartment is non-smoking.

For winter sports enthusiasts the following information will be useful:

The apartment is situated 5 minutes drive away from The Prorel gondola lift, situated next to a large underground car park. There are plenty of equipment hire shops near the lift.

A ski shuttle bus (navette) runs regularly from the old town to The Prorel lift. This service is included in the price of your ski pass.

It is also easy to drive to Chantemerle, (10 mins drive in reasonable conditions). There you have the choice of three different lifts to get to the slopes.

Kayaking enthusiasts will be interested to note that there is a put in point to the south of Briançon for the river Durance and also at Chantemerle for the Guisane river.

Briançon, the highest town in Europe, is a great fortress town, walled and fortified by Vauban, and the result is simply stunning. The town has two parts: the lower town is at the junction of the Durance and Guisane rivers and the upper town is the walled area, fortified by Vauban and including the Fort du Chateau fortress at the peak. The apartment is in the centre of the old town, surrounded by numerous restaurants and shops.

The lower town is an active commercial centre, with shops, cafés and restaurants, some along Rue Centrale leading to the Rond Point du Queyras (where you may see kayakers going down the Durance through the town). The town market is here, in front of the ancient (but still active) fire station, at the bottom end of the Parc de la Schappe. Above the town part you can visit the Vauban fortifications of Fort du Chateau.
