Here is some bad news: Non-action stations

by Fergus Rainbow on December 8, 2009

No ParkingGot some not very good news, it’s not official but there is serious doubt as to whether Serre Chevalier will open on the 12th.

I‘d go so far as to say it will be announced very soon, but remember where you nearly heard the bad news first.

I was to buy some skis, but my dealer said there’s no rush for Saturday – and I’m hurting man, just a taste, something. I suppose the first thing you learn is you always have to wait.

The 12th was always a punchy call, traditionally the 15th or 16th is when the station comes online. The rain of Monday night didn’t help, the temperature is just over what is needed to fire the snow cannons up and to top it all it’s blowing a howler up there, judging from the whisps screaming off the tops.
There is some good news, especially if you cross country ski, the paths are mostly prepped and there are people in spandex rushing around, but for alpine I’d say it’s no go.

This weather, ie nice, clear but windy is apparently an anti-cyclone and it’s predicted to stick around for a bit.

Maybe it will all blow over, now I see this doom on paper, I’m not certain I want to put my name on it, still this is the word on the street. The pisters go to work on Thursday and we’ll get a better idea then.

Yours on tenterhooks, putting his money where his mouth is – Fergus Rainbow.

I dunno mate – the first year I was here for the season was 2001/2002 and the resort opened on the first day of December, but it didn’t snow until Boxing Day. As I recall it was only open above Serre Ratier, but what was there was perfectly fine and much better than the Hemel Hempstead dry slope I was used to!!
I can’t remember if Monetier was open.
I’d say it will open Saturday, but maybe more down my end of the valley (1350) rather than up yours.
Thanks for the ‘No Parking’ sign btw – was that what you meant?

Don’t flame the messenger,
maybe over the Serre Ratier/ Bachas line, but their is doubt here at the “top end” of the valley.
No one likes, no one likes us, we are Monetier, super Monetier from the den.

Actually you may be right – an unofficial source has officially announced that Villeneuve may not be open and this has been confirmed officially by the Glisse en Azur kiddies ski school who will not be running ski school on Saturday because Serre Chevalier will be shut. You are right mate.

Hoping it will be open for the first guests in the apartment on the 18th. Keep me posted Fergus.

Just heard via SnowHeads that Monetier will open on the 12th, with the rest opening gradually after that. Better than nowt.

It’s out of the bag now, none of it will be opened on the 12th, so I guess we wait till it snows next or the temp drops enough to get the snow cannons working – it was 13 0c in Briancon today – balmy
