The historic Cité Vauban in Briançon is well known for its numerous restaurants offering French cuisine and “mountain” specialities. The “Duo” restaurant, located within the ramparts, has views of the Mont Prorel and the Upper Durance valley. The interior is decorated in warm golden tones, with “easy on the ear” jazz music providing a South of France vibe. There is also a terrace for sunny lunchtime dining.

The style of cuisine is “French cooking with a twist” and a Mediterranean influence is present in a number of the dishes. The team running the “Duo” are Anglo-French which makes ordering straightforward for those less confident with their “français”. The menus change four times a year; the current menu offers an excellent range of starters, including warm goat’s cheese in ham with salad and balsamic dressing, pâté with fig confit and toast, the traditionally retro, but brilliant, prawn cocktail and interesting possibilities such as shredded duck with Hoi Sin sauce and pancakes. We ordered the goat’s cheese and the prawns, both were tasty and excellent.

The choice of main dishes includes the traditional “pièce de boucher”, a thick cut of beef steak served with mange-tout, carrot and new potatoes, chicken with tagliatelli in pepper sauce with mushrooms and rocket, marinated lamb “souris”, two fish dishes: “dorado” and “turbot”, To be honest I found it difficult to chose because I wanted to try nearly all of them! The Husband ordered the beef steak which was perfectly cooked and succulent. I tried the chicken and tagliatelli which proved to be an interesting combination of tastes. If you can’t live without your cheesy mountain meals, fondue style dishes are available too.

The service was friendly and professional at all times. It was a delight to have our orders taken and food served without long delays or feeling rushed, bearing in mind the restaurant was quite busy. Our waiter, Thomas, recommended an excellent local red wine, a 2007 Tresbaudon, with a soft, oaky flavour to compliment the varied dishes we’d chosen. When it came to the choice between three deserts; almond cake, lemon cheesecake or warm chocolate brownies, we opted for a little of each with coffee. Rounded off with a genepi digestive (or two!) it was the perfect end to a lovely meal. An à la carte meal for two with wine would cost approximately around 70€, but this becomes less if one opts for the “formule” or set meal options, which start at around 25€ per person.
