On the way out of Briançon towards Gap is the commercial zone, centre for building supplies, big supermarkets and an excellent restaurant called La Fabbrica del Gusto, you will need your own transport, but it is well worth making that ten minute journey to eat in a place a little off the beaten track.
A large room and a surrounding sun-terrace that allows one to dine out of the wind with views of the mountains.
Run by Montpellier native Greg, who also does a fine line in spoken English, who has been living in Serre Chevalier for three years, having formerly run the Brasera in Monêtier, he has now brought his expertise to the Zone, where he serves generous and tasty fare as well as prepares regular evening events such as salsa and dance nights, when they push the tables back and have no fear of disturbing any locals.
Portions are large and many of the ingredients are made fresh in house, the pastas and raviolis are great and these are probably the best frites in the valley. Not surprisingly the menu is Provencal and Italian influenced, with lots of fresh ingredients to balance the heartier mountain fare.
Salads in France are often a meal in themselves, the Salade Montagnarde (9€) is enough for a real man, but is a great starter split between two, as was the India Bruschetta (8.50€) a nicely flavoured chicken dish with a hint of spice.
Fresh, home-made pasta does taste better. The Saint Marcellin (5.50€) was generously topped with this regional cheese sauce and fine slices of speck, well worth ordering and also available in the little ravioli form.
For meat the Souris d’Agneau (16€) is a great dish and the chips are worth mentioning again – they were that good and in the evenings there are several excellent fondues available, including the unlimited Bourguignonne (30€) with delicious charleroi beef.
All this can be washed down with drinks from a full bar, with wines available by the glass or bottle.
