Stayin at the Club Med in Serre Chevalier from 10th Jan, just wondered:-
1. How far the bars are from our hotel, is there a bus?
2. The nearest lift, walking distance?
3. The nightlife, any good?
4. The best spots on a powder day?
Hi Paul, Club Med is very handy for the Pontillas lift, at the moment you can ski down to the lift and then go up properly.
Buses – I’m not sure about, they all stop at about 7pm – unfortunately it is a bit of a walk to Villeneuve where you will find my favourite bars, La Grotte (for live music) and MoJos (just a nice bar). Club Med do their own entertainment (animations) but it is a bit, errr, french.
Nightlife, as above…as far as nightclubs go there aren’t really any up that way anymore – nearest one is the Escapade in Chantemerle.
Powder days? Not really my forte, I’ll try and get Fergus to fill you in about this – he’s more of a powder boy than me:)
Sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner, but in answer to section 4 of the above question, which I have conferred with Davina at Ski Connection to get a more balanced answer, because as you may have noticed I’m a bit Monetier.
I reckon you can’t beat Monetier for powder, it is a bit cold at this time of year, but in Jan it’s quieter because of this and so powder tracking is possible, also through the trees here is better for low visibility days.
Great powder off the top of Cibuit, by the sides of the pistes and L’Yret if you walk back on yourself, you’ll pass the face to try as you get the lift up, so you’ll see what you’ll be up against.
You better not get the entrance wrong cause if you miss the turn you’re gone – that is in all seriousness.
You can also walk the other way from the L’Yret lift and get onto the most challenging sort of piste called le Montagnole, very steep start but very rewarding.
Also there are a couple of easy to walks to runs to the left as you get off the Cucamelle lift, sort of parallel with the eponymous piste, one down to Frejus and another back towards Monetier, but this needs the right snow.
Outside Monetier try Tour de Prorel, Cucumelle vallon, Tete de
grand pre and Les Corneilles, they are easily found on the piste map if you ask a local.
If you want recomendations for guides:
Darren Turner at InsightSki and the man at ESF in Monetier for this is Bruno Bouchard.
Hope that helped
Fergus
Hi. Can anybody recommend a decent place to go to for ski hire in Chantemerle? Am interested in good service at a reasonable price.
Also, I did a season here in 2003/2004, which was almost entirely spent drinking in the Yeti. My tab was astronomical. Aside from the Extreme Bar, where is a good place to go to in Chantemerle these days?
Rick,
I need to contact Torchy Urgently can you give me a good email address or telephone number for him please mate at the email address above, cheers,
Sadly the Yeti is no more. The closest kinda ambience is now The Station, which is new this year. The Station is right on the end of the Luc Alphand piste where the Arbre Pain used to be, ask at the bar for ‘gary’ and you’ll get a free house shot.
For ski hire we like Outland, but there is probably a wider range of equipment in Sport 2000.

@Rick Lomas:
Many thanks Rick.
Is a “High Altitude Bar Crawl” scheduled in for this season?
I’m over for a week on the 7th March.
Unfortunately the bar crawl is sheduled for the 24 March. Call in at The Station in Chantemerle for details if anyone you know can make it.
