Oh have I got some advice for you, this is not me mucking about, but for real son.
If you (and you should) come to Serre Chevalier for the skiing or winter sports stuff, for goodness sake do not go to Briancon on a Monday morning and expect to achieve anything.
I’m talking about the new town, not in the fort, but I reckon the fort is even more shut.
For some reason it’s half day opening on Monday, in fact half might be a bit generous, 30% day opening is probably more accurate, I mean why bother? By the time the shutters have been rolled open it’s time to close up.
The little cafes are open, if you feel like a sandwich, but the Vietnamese place is shut, the Chinese place was open but the set plate was Eur19.5 per person, which to me seems damn expensive for a starter and a plate with rice, I think that included pudding, but I don’t really care for Asian desserts, so that didn’t balance the books. This means a cool Eur40 for two, no I reckon that’s not a deal.
So we ate in the Alsace Brasserie, a set meal of a sliver of pork and fried potatoes at Eur8, honestly it was a wee bit small for me, mind you I had skipped breakfast, so that’s to be expected, an entrecote with chips and something approaching ratatouille off the menu was Eur12 or so, this was by far the better choice, much larger and well cooked.
Then at 2pm we decided to try and see what was going down in the Orange phone shop – as this is the time they open on Monday. Well we got a gabby one all right, but I’m going to have to go AZERTY rather than QWERTY, some concession to living in France I guess.
However if you’re interested in getting a phone while you’re here, they sell little ones in the Tabac for Eur39 with a chargeable SIM – and they’re open all day on Monday.
