At the foot of the Mickey piste and at the start of the Aravet bubble is a Serre Chevalier watering-hole institution, famed from Timbuktu to Perth – if you’ve ever heard of Serre Che you will have heard of the things that go on at the Grotte.
The bar has been given a new international and inviting spin by patron Steve Boro, much of the sticky beer-laryness has been channeled into a more tempered and accommodating vibe, but as there’s something for everyone, including those who like a game of pool, Sunday’s regular shooter night caters for those with a yen for liquid nostalgia.
The international experience is being embraced by the visitors and regulars of the valley, meaning a real mix of people, so you could be rubbing shoulders with Swedes, French, Brits or even those from more exotic climes – such as the Russians who are discovering these mountains.
Whatever night, you’re sure to find something going on at the Grotte, but the week plays out like this: Moustache Monday has retro vinyl slapped down by DJ Cheesey Choons (that’s with a Ch tosh); Tuesday is event night, could be a beach party, could be fancy dress; French band Consortium play Wednesdays – two sets, one après ski one later; Thursday is open mike night – guitars and instruments are provided so no need to pack yours; Friday is devoted to local booze brothers The Harper Brothers playing live; Saturday has that big Swede DJ Dennis on the decks and Sunday is devoted to shooters and general socialising (as they call it).
The kitchen is open till 6pm, after that you can get a pukka pie until close – why not get one with a pint, the pair cost €6.50.
