Space France and Serre Chevalier: en evolution?
We are always amazed that for one of the largest ski resorts in Europe, Serre Chevalier is often overlooked. It is hard to understand why this could be, this place has some of the most excellent skiing and snowboarding available in Europe. Serre Chevalier is an area composed from real villages and the town of Briançon, rather than being a purpose built ski resort. But what many people don’t realise is that Serre Chevalier is also an an amazing place in the summer too.
However, things are changing in Serre Chevalier. At the moment the ‘lift company’ has changed to ‘Compagnie des Alpes’, who are the main players in The Alps as far as skiing is concerned. This means that Serre Chevalier is a resort ‘en evolution’ and although villages such as Chantemerle have more than their fair share of building sites and cranes, this can only help bring the resort properly into the 21st century. But, is this what we want?
Personally I miss the old ‘Yeti Hotel’ in Chantemerle (Serre Chevalier 1350) and I can’t believe that the new MGM buildings have swallowed up an entire car park and the ‘grassy area’ from the municipale swimming pool. Seeing Hotel l’Adret smashed to pieces and the trees surrounding it ripped up caused a deep emotional feeling for me.
Hotel l’Adret was the original reason why I came here 15 years ago, at the time our mate, Al Miles was the hotel mananger there and invited The Harper Brothers to play there. The Harper Brothers have been an integral part of Serre Chevalier for a long time now.
Perry Gamby and his Space France team have bought most of the older ‘defunct’ buildings in Serre Chevalier and are rapidly demolishing and rebuilding Serre Chevalier to put it in the hands of the rich vacationer. I’m really not sure how I feel about this so I’d love to hear your comments about this, so leave them below.
If you're new here, you may want to stay current with this Serre Chevalier RSS feed, click this link and your browser should tell you what to do. Thanks for visiting!
